NYCC 2012: Dark Horse Brings Us The Greatest Hero in the Mass Effect Universe

Commander Shepard.  The name brings pride to the universe.  The Spectre whose sacrifice ended the Reaper threat.

But who cares?  I mean, sure, he (she) is pretty great, but he (she) is old news.

There is one other Spectre who has stayed in Shepard's shadow for far too long, and Dark Horse Comics is finally letting us see the truth behind the tentacles in a digital one-shot.  As announced during New York Comic Con, we will finally know the story behind BLASTO: THE FIRST HANAR SPECTRE.

Blasto: Eternity is Forever, written by Mass Effect's lead writer Mac Walters and art by Omar Francia, is slated for release on N7 day (November 7th), coinciding with the release of the Mass Effect Trilogy on the Xbox 360 and the PC.

We are surely in for many, many awesome and over-syllabized one liners.  And I cannot wait.

Be sure to pick up the comic via Dark Horse Digital on November 7th, or else this one will be forced to expend a heat clip due to excessive weapon discharge into the frontal bone of your female progenitor copulating facial structure.

Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut Launches Tuesday

Move over, George Lucas. Mass Effect 3’s long-awaited special edition is due next week, and thankfully, Shepard still, and always, shoots first.

On Tuesday, June 26th, Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut will be available for download, adding further exposition to the game’s controversial ending “through additional cinematic sequences and epilogue scenes.” Ever since the game’s March release, an unprecedented fan outcry has prompted BioWare to appease the masses and further explain the fates of certain characters, as well as give a broader look at how the galaxy as a whole has been affected by Commander Shepard’s mission. First announced in April, the Extended Cut “gives a sense of what the future holds as a result of the decisions made throughout the series. And it shows greater detail in the successes or failures based on how players achieved their endings,” according to a statement from BioWare.

Keep in mind, this will not be a new ending. It is merely an expansion upon what is already part of the game. A 1.9 GB expansion, mind you. And, in true Mass Effect fashion, the single DLC pack will contain multiple variations on the new content, based on the player’s choices and actions throughout the Mass Effect trilogy.

Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut will be free to download for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC on Tuesday, and will be available until April 12th, 2014. No rush…apparently.

Check out the official BioWare Blog for more inormation on the Extended Cut.

Mass Effect 3: Rebellion Pack DLC

The furor over the ending of Mass Effect 3 has died down (mercifully), as BioWare works on their extended ending due out later this year. While we wait for a few answers to a few nagging questions, the developers want to keep us invested in the battle for sentient life by enticing us with more free multiplayer-focused DLC.

The "Rebellion Pack," like the "Resurgence Pack" before it, adds two new maps and six new characters to the Galaxy at War, as well as few other surprises, including a new mission during the objective waves (hallelujah!)  Here's the full list:

New Maps

  • "Firebase Jade," on the Salarian homeworld, Sur'Kesh
  • "Firebase Goddess," located on the Reaper-torn Asari homeworld, Thessia

Characters

  • Ex-Cerberus Adept/Vanguard
  • Vorcha Soldier/Sentinel
  • Quarian Male Engineer/Infiltrator

New Weapons

  • Cerberus Harrier
  • Krysae Sniper Rifle
  • Reegar Carbine

New Mission Objective: Escort a high-priority package to the extraction zone for pickup from Alliance forces.

New Gear Slot: Equip gear in a new persistent equip slot to offer a non-expiring gameplay bonus (in addition to the consumable bonuses as before.)

If you've stepped away from the Galaxy at War (as I have), this sounds like a great way to get back in.

The Mass Effect 3: Rebellion Pack will be available for download on May 29 on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC (via Origin) for the welcome cost of zero dollars.

Mass Effect 3: Resurgence Pack

Krogan Battlemaster Vanguard? Oh, hell yes!

Right on the heels of the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut announcement, news of the first post-launch DLC has dropped.  The Mass Effect 3: Resurgence Pack, a multiplayer expansion set, will add new maps, characters, equipment, and weapons to the already popular, chaotic, and amazing ME3 multiplayer experience.  Catch the bullet points in the announcement trailer below!

The Resurgence Pack adds 6 new characters (1 to each class) to the multiplayer roster.  I know plenty of people have been hoping for some Geth, but that might get a little weird when the opposing force is the Geth.  Oh well, heretics will be heretics.  And let's be honest, who really wants to play as a Batarian?  Those four-eyed bulldog batstards have garnered quite a hateful following.

The new weapons look to be pretty devastating.  The Striker Assault Rifle is a Krogan weapon with explosive rounds. Sold! The Kishock Harpoon Gun, a one-shot Batarian weapon, puts a giant spike into your target's face! And the Geth weapon family now adds an SMG.  This little bugger's rate of fire will increases when the trigger is held.

And finally, we have 2 new maps in the pack. Firebase Hydra, a hydro-electric power plant, is located on the Quarian world of Ontarom, also the home of Firebase Dagger (the one that looks like a SETI outpost), and Firebase Condor, a Turian outpost located on the battle-scarred landscape of one of Palaven's moons.

Firebase Hyrda

Firebase Condor

Excited? You should be. And the best part about the ME3: Resurgence Pack? It's free! On April 10th, Xbox 360, PC, and North American PS3 players will be able to download the new pack for no additional cost (April 11th for PS3 players in Europe).  But a word to the wise, only the maps will be immediately available after download.  The characters, weapons, and new equipment will still have to been acquired through Recruit, Veteran, and Spectre packs in the multiplayer store.  So keep completing those Wave 3, 6, and 10 challenges to rack up those credits. You'll need them!

Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut Due This Summer

It looks like BioWare has given in to the unprecedented fan outcry over the ending(s) of Mass Effect 3.

This Summer, fans will be able to download the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut, a free DLC pack that will expand upon the game's existing ending.  Through cinematic additions to the game's ending and epilogue, players will receive more closure and clarity regarding both their own personal journey through the game, as well as how the galaxy, as a whole, has been affected.

Dr. Ray Muzyka, Co-Founder of BioWare and General Manager of EA's BioWare Label, had this to say:

We are all incredibly proud of Mass Effect 3 and the work done by Casey Hudson and team. Since launch, we have had time to listen to the feedback from our most passionate fans and we are responding. With the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut we think we have struck a good balance in delivering the answers players are looking for while maintaining the team's artistic vision for the end of this story arc in the Mass Effect universe.

Casey Hudson, Executive Producer of the Mass Effect series has added,

We have reprioritized our post-launch development efforts to provide the fans who want more closure with even more context and clarity to the ending of the game, in a way that will feel more personalized for each player.

I'm glad to see that the developers have chosen to add to their ending and not change it.  I was in the camp that believed that BioWare and EA should stick to their guns and not feel obligated to alter their story's ending simply because people's personal expectations were not met.  But as a fan of the game, I am excited at the prospect of additional content to help close out an already amazing interactive experience.  To agree with Dr. Muzyka, this course of action provides a great balance of maintaining the developer's product, as well as hearing, acknowledging, and responding to the fans' thoughts and opinions. (But I would be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed that future DLC has been delayed as a result.)

The Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut will be available for no additional charge on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC platforms this Summer.

Mass Effect 3: Official Launch Trailer

BioWare has released plenty of promotional trailers for Mass Effect 3. Today, they've premiered the video that earns the honor of "Official Launch Trailer." Check it out below, and be sure to be sitting down.

I'm inclined to heartily agree with the quote from Yahoo! Games

Review: Mass Effect 3 Demo

You’ll have to pardon the tardiness of OTF’s review of the Mass Effect 3 demo.  We’ve been hard-pressed to pull ourselves away from it.

Since it dropped on February 14th (much to the joy of single gamers everywhere), the demo has given ME fans the opportunity to glimpse the Reaper invasion, as well as jump into the new multiplayer mode.  The single player campaign, continuing Commander Shepard’s story, is split into two parts, beginning with our hero (or heroine) back on Earth, in an Alliance uniform, and finally getting to say “I told you so” when the Reapers arrive.  If you’ve played Mass Effect 2, you’ll have plenty of questions regarding the timeline.  Among them might be, “Why is Anderson no longer a council member?” (if you chose that option), “How did the Reapers make it to this galaxy when you closed the door on them in ‘Arrival’?” (if you downloaded it), and “What became of Shepard’s team?” (if they survived). Since this is just the demo, it’s more than likely that all of these questions will be answered when the game is released on March 6th.  The second half of the single player demo, taking place further along in the ME3 story, is the mission that OTF had the privilege of playing at New York Comic Con in October. Shepard, alongside former teammates Wrex, Garrus, Liara, and Mordin, are on the Salarian homeworld, escorting a female Krogan, who is apparently the key to preventing a Krogan/Turian war. And who’s providing the opposition? Your old friends from Cerberus. This mission looks to be a key point in Shepard’s quest to recruit, not just teammates this time around, but entire races in order to fight the Reapers. The stakes are officially raised.

This single-player experience also introduces a few new combat mechanics for ME3.  Shepard will now be climbing ladders and leaping over small gaps to get around, and while he/she is under fire, you’ll notice some new dodge moves, allowing Shepard to dive/roll out of harm’s way. Even the storm/dash has been improved, allowing for a continuous run, rather than short sprints. Long-gone are the days of the meter that had to refill before you could run again. My personal favorite would have to be the heavy melee, now delivering more than just an elbow to the face.  Depending on your class, you can unleash an attacking ranging from an omni-blade slash to a concentrated biotic blast.  Just make sure your aim is true… These are all vast improvements that will help make Mass Effect even better.

Travel to the Salarian homeworld in part 2 of the single player demo!

While the single player missions give you an idea of what to expect in the campaign, multiplayer is a whole ‘nother story. Consisting of 11 combat rounds with bad guys of increasing deadliness, it is reminiscent of the wave-based multiplayer modes found in such favorites as Gears of War (Horde), Call of Duty (Spec Ops), and Halo (Firefight).  The 11th wave, where all team members have to get to the shuttle extraction point, will remind gamers of a similar goal in Left 4 Dead. BioWare might be a little late to the party, but ME3 looks to be taking team-based multiplayer and making its own indelible mark on the popular mode. I’d like to see Marcus Fenix hit a Locust with a fully teched up biotic warp. Then again, I really WOULD like to see that…  The demo presents you with only two maps and one adversary (in this case, Cerberus commandos), but that has been enough to keep the attention of ME fans everywhere. The full version will blow us all away, I guarantee it.

Not only is this mode INCREDIBLY fun to play with your friends, but it also allows you a more in-depth look at the game mechanics that come up between missions. ME1 had way too much weapon and armor customization. ME2 toned it down significantly. ME3 seems to have finally struck the balance. You will still have your choice of weapon model within a class (smg, shotgun, etc.), but you will also be able to modify these weapons with equipment that you can acquire. For example, ammo capacity expansions, stabilizers (to improve accuracy), and bayonets (to increase melee damage) to name a few. Teching up powers has also received a facelift. Individual powers now have multiple branches, allowing for greater customization than the single choices presented in ME2. Both of these systems look to bring back more of the RPG element that ME2 lacked.

With Mass Effect 3 a little over a week away, the demo has certainly raised the anticipation level of the entire fan base. Be ready to take Earth back on March 6th.

Mass Effect 3 Demo Adds to Anticipation for March Release

Just a few months ahead of its anticipated release, game developer BioWare announced via press release that the demo for Mass Effect 3 will be released on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, on all platforms (Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.) The demo will let players get a taste of the first battle of the single-player campaign, the new co-operative multiplayer mode, as well as a number of other features, like character and weapon customization. Interestingly, the 360 flavor of the ME3 demo will accommodate full voice recognition via the Xbox 360 Kinect.

Casey Hudson, Executive Producer of the Mass Effect series, was quoted in the press release for his excitement in getting the demo into gamers’ hands for the first time next month. Notably, Hudson also stated that the “scale of the game is bigger than anything we’ve ever done.” Considering that BioWare and parent company Electronic Arts have worked on many games of fairly large scales, these words should resonate in excited gamers as we head toward the March release.

Anticipation for ME3 has really begun to reach a tipping point with the recent news that the user experience would be one of a kind. The developers were focused on providing an incredible experience to both newcomers and experienced gamers alike, providing different modes and character development portions for the game. Players will now have the option of choosing from three different modes (story, action, and role playing) all of which provide a different experience, depending on how you’d like to play. Once a mode is chosen, players will then be able to make other adjustments throughout game play.

The news of a demo in February will only continue to build the hype for ME3 leading up to its March release. Both BioWare and EA have their hands full in trying to meet the lofty expectations for this third release in the Mass Effect franchise. Thankfully, they seem up to the challenge, as the early descriptions, trailers, and previews have shown great improvements over the game’s predecessors.

Mass Effect 3 is slated for release on March 6, 2012 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and the PC.

Review: Mass Effect: Invasion #1

In the Mass Effect universe, Omega space station is a lawless, de facto haven for fugitives, criminals, and outlaws in the Terminus System. And Aria T'Loak is the queen of them all.

The conclusion of Mass Effect 2 saw Commander Shepherd successfully navigating the fabled Omega-4 Relay into Reaper space in order to take on the Collectors. Now that the path is open, The Illusive Man takes the opportunity to send his pro-human Cerberus troops to study the universe behind the Relay. Not letting an significant money making opportunity pass her up, Aria T'Loak graciously allows Cerberus to resupply their ships on Omega.

This is where Mass Effect: Invasion begins, and it begins with a bang. Bursting forth from a Cerberus vessel that just landed on Omega, ferocious creatures called Adjutants attack the unsuspecting victims waiting for the ship on the landing bay. Omar Francia's art really comes through here, capturing both the action and the fear caused by the Adjutants (despite their reminiscence of anthropomorphic shrimp.) Aria's first appearance, in particular, showcasing her rather potent Asari biotic abilities against an unlucky Adjutant is captured superbly.

Later, Cerberus ship Elbrus comes to the aid of Omega, destroying the ships commandeered by the Adjutants. Reluctantly, Aria joins forces with the Illusive Man and Cerberus General Petrovsky for the sake of defending her station from the creatures beyond the Omega-4 relay.

Writer Mac Walters does a great job of capturing the personalities of Aria, the Illusive Man, and the other characters to whom we've been introduced in the game. (This is refreshing, but unsurprising, as Walters is the lead writer for Mass Effect 2 and the upcoming Mass Effect 3.)  Walters appropriately portrays Aria as a no-nonsense badass right from her first frame, barking orders at her people and Cerberus forces alike, with fallen Adjutants at her feet.

While there are some lines that might be forgivingly labeled "cheesy" ("Together, we'll lift the siege of Omega and strike back. Starting now, the battle for Omega begins!"), overall, the story is very well paced and tightly knit. The twist on the last frame is, in particular, enough to make the mind reel with possibilities and keep you coming back for more.

Ultimately, Mass Effect: Invasion #1 is a great start to what could be a great series. As long Walters consistently portrays the Illusive Man as the calculating, mysterious SOB he's meant to be, there will no doubt be plenty to work with to make a great four issue run. I highly recommend you pick it up with your stack of New 52s.
