Assemble! A New "Avengers" Trailer Hits the Web!

Just in case you've been living under a rock (or in the desert with Dr. Banner), Marvel's The Avengers comes out this May. Marvel/Disney has release a new trailer to get you even more hyped up.

The studio is still doing a great job of concealing the true nature of Loki's army.  Skrull? Kree? Frost Giants? No idea. But, I'm excited to find out when I plunk my butt down in that theater seat on May 4th.

The Avengers is directed by Joss Whedon, and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.

Movie Review: 'Captain America: The First Avenger'

Occupation: Super Soldier.  Special Skills: Throws Shield Well.

Captain America: The First Avenger, the latest Marvel film to hit theaters, came out of the gate strong with positive reviews from both critics and fans, and a box office return that just inched beyond fellow Marvel hero, Thor.  The last piece of groundwork laid for The Avengers next May, the film is also the final superhero adventure of the summer.

Following the exploits of Steve Rogers, the 98-pound weakling turned one-of-a-kind super soldier, the WWII-era adventure boasts brilliant perfomances from its cast, spectacular visuals and action sequences, and plenty of tip-of-the-hat moments to fans.  Chris Evans, who previously made his mark on the Marvel universe as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in the two Fantastic Four movies, IS Captain America, throwing the shield, refusing to back down, and punching Hitler just as you would expect on the comic book page.  Surrounding him is a magnificent team of actors, which includes Hugo Weaving as the rogue Nazi scientist, the Red Skull, Tommy Lee Jones as crusty Colonel Chester Phillips (who gets the lion's share of the one-liners), Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, a woman who could've single-handedly fought off the Nazi invasion of Britain and still look good doing it, and Stanley Tucci as Dr. Erskine, the man who sees the true hero inside Steve Rogers.

Many of us had faith that director Joe Johnston, who brought comic hero, The Rocketeer to the big screen in 1994, would give another WWII-era hero the film treatment he deserves.  Thankfully, our faith was rewarded.  Moments of humor, tension, and drama are all balanced beautifully while still maintaining the fantastic feel of a comic book adventure in an alternate history.  Punctuating all of this is the score by composer Alan Silvestri, which blasts you with heroic horns and military drums, giving the film the sound it definitely required.

Continuing the theme of interconnectivity in the Marvel film universe, as well as acknowledgment of the source material, Cap features several overt nods to Thor's mythology, Bruce Banner's future research, and most notably, the Stark legacy. (Dominic Cooper gives a Howard Hughes-like flair to the young Howard Stark, previously played by John Slattery in Iron Man 2.)  Coming right off the pages of Marvel's other notable WWII title are the Howling Commandos, the team originally led by Sgt. Nick Fury (later changed to Jack Fury) which includes "Dum Dum" Dugan (Neal McDonough), Gabe Jones (Derek Luke), and "Pinky" Pinkteron (JJ Field).  Dugan's iconic bowler hat and mustache, and Pinkerton's red beret are the perfect touches to maintain the comic routes of these characters.  Even Hydra scientist, Arnim Zola (Toby Jones) gets a brief moment that references his comic book counterpart when his face appears smushed on a tiny television screen.  But this all pales in comparison to the biggest post-credits sequence yet, a teaser trailer showcasing the majority of the Avengers team, several of whom are sporting new threads.

Captain America: The First Avenger, in short, is a hell of a good time and another example of Marvel Studios knocking one out of the park.  Let's hope that they can keep their record unblemished on May 4th when The Avengers hits theaters.

Fridgecast Follow-up: Comics You Should Read

At the end of the most recent Fridgecast, I had the opportunity to share two of my favorite graphic novels.  But it seemed like an opportunity to add a little bit more, talk about the comics that I love, and why I love them.  My favorites are the ones that are distanced from the human elements, that address the consequences of superheroes as gods among the human race, what they might do, how they might reject or cling to their humanities.

Mythology is my bag.  When I was eight I had this big yellow book of greek mythology.  It was full of stories of the gods.  I remember my mother reading The Hobbit to me.  It was probably where I started to love of a good story and myth, fantastic locations, and good solid book.

I continue to read when I can, but it's getting harder and harder lately, so I've turned back to another childhood past time to fill some of that void:  comic books.  Well, I don't collect them anymore; I just buy the trades.  But they're quick reads and relatively inexpensive and it lets me feel young.  But it all goes back to that love (obsession?) with mythology.  The imagery and art adds to that mythological element as well.  I once read somewhere that comics are such an interesting medium because they straddle the world between literature and film.  In simplistic terms, literature is about observing characters through what they think and say.  Film is about observing characters through their actions; what they do.  Comics provide a bit of both--the words and the actions.  In many ways you can do things in comics that would be too cumbersome to describe in a novel, or too expensive to show in a movie.  There are a still a lot archaic, cheesey things hanging around the medium.  It's like a vestigial tale.  But overall I think it's worthwile; there are some extremely talented authors and artists out there using this to tell stories where they could not elsewhere.  And comics are what?  80 years old?  100?  That's a pretty new method of storytelling.  It is still growing.

The best example of mythological themes and motifs in comics is, in my opinion, Kingdom Come.

The Amazing, Retro Captain America Crew Poster!

For those of you hoping to see Chris Evans recreating that famous cover image of Captain America punching Hitler in the face, you got your wish.

Unfortunately, this new poster for Captain America: The First Avenger, is only available to crew members who worked on the film and not the general public.  Created by comic artist Paola Rivera (Daredevil, Amazing Spider-Man), the poster features the iconic propaganda image from Captain America Comics #1, and is done in a stunning 1940s art style.

Captain America: The First Avenger opens in 3D and 2D theaters on July 22.

Captain America Trailer Debuts!

We got a small taste with a TV spot during the Super Bowl.  Then Entertainment Tonight gave us a few new glimpses.  But now, the first full trailer for Captain America: The First Avenger is online!  Take a look!

Exciting can't begin to describe it!

Sharp-eyed fans will spot a few Marvel cameos, such as the young Howard Stark (played by Dominic Cooper) present at the Super Solider experiment, James "Bucky" Barnes (Sebastian Stan), and The Howling Commandos, Sgt. (Jack) Fury's scrappy band of WWII badasses who appear to be right alongside Cap throughout this adventure.  (Neal McDonough looks positively spot-on as Dum Dum Dugan!)

Captain America: The First Avenger is directed by Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer, Jumanji), and stars Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Tommy Lee Jones, Stanley Tucci, and Hayley Atwell.  Look for it in theaters in both 2D and 3D on July 22nd.

'Captain America: Super Soldier' Invades on July 19

Spring has only just started, but we're already looking toward the summer.  Sega announced today that Captain America: Super Soldier (which we previously demo'ed) will be shield-slashing its way to homes on July 19, 2011, not-so-coincidentally meshing with the release of the Joe Johnston-helmed Captain America: The First Avenger just a few days later.

While developer Next Level Games was pretty adamant in declaring that Super Solider was not a "movie video game" but rather a "original game built in the universe established by the movie," it's somewhat difficult to shake the feeling that the game will fall victim to the movie game hell like many before it, despite being written by Avengers: The Initiative writer Christos Gage.

Then again, from what we saw in our preview, Captain America: Super Soldier does seem to borrow (we'll call it "borrow") heavily from Arkham Asylum - and that's a rock solid foundation.  It'll be worth watching to see if the game lives up to that potential.

Captain America: Super Soldier will be available on July 19 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo 3DS, and Nintendo DS.  Captain America: The First Avenger, starring Chris Evans, will be in theatres on July 22.

Hugo Weaving as The Red Skull

Entertainment Weekly has revealed an incredible new image of Hugo Weaving as The Red Skull in Marvel's Captain America: The First Avenger.

Up to this point, we have only received brief glimpses of The Skull in the TV spot that aired during the Super Bowl.  This new image reveals just how incredible the makeup job is.  I especially love how you can still see hints of Weavings features under the skeletal mask.  Also, note the Hydra logo on both the belt buckle and should patches.  NAZIS!!

Captain America: The First Avenger is directed by Joe Johnston and hits theaters in 2D and 3D on July 22nd.

Michael Giacchino Responds to 'Captain America' Rumors

This past week has been aflutter with wild speculation about who is composing the music to the highly anticipated Joe Johnston-helmed Captain America: The First Avenger.  Michael Giacchino’s (Lost, Star Trek) name immediately rose to the top of the guessing game creating frenzy among his fans in the niche film music stratosphere.  His name even appears as the composer credit on the unreliable Internet Movie Database.

Unfortunately Giacchino’s involvement in the project is just that... speculation.  The Maestro released this statement this morning regarding Captain America:

"I have always been a fan of the Captain America character - but at this moment I am not scoring the film."

As with anything in Hollywood, this news could change by dinnertime.  Joe Johnston has previously worked with James Horner, Danny Elfman, James Newton Howard, Mark Isham and Don Davis.

Chris Evans as Captain America!

After a long defrosting period, OTF is back for 2011!  And to kick off this new year in the Fridge, we have news and images from the cinematic world of Marvel.

The first photo of Chris Evans in full Captain America costume has surfaced.  The photo appears in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, and appears online at Superherohype.com.  Check it out below.

The costume falls in line with everything we've seen thus far, including the initial digital rendering of the suit, as well as the photos of the motorcycle stunt rider seen last year.  The costume definitely does a good job of blending the classic style of Cap's costume and the functionality of a combat uniform.  Even the helmet works well, especially the painted-on wings.

So far, everything we've seen from this production is encouraging.  I think the next thing the fans want to get a good look at is Hugo Weaving in full Red Skull makeup.

Captain America: The First Avenger stars Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, and Hugo Weaving is directed by Joe Johnston.  The film is due in theaters on July 22nd.

First Official Pic of Chris Evans as Cap!

I think it's safe to say, anyone who was worried about Chris Evans being able to pull off Captain America can now relax. Entertainment Weekly via io9 has brought us our first official look at Chris Evans as Captain America. It's only from the chest up, but man that costume is perfect. It mixes 1940's textures and style with the original costume concept. We still have to see the cowl, but if they go with the helmet look the final product will be stunning.
