Review: Community, "Alternative History of the German Invasion"

Changnesia? Am-dean-sia? I'm all turned around.

Unlike much of the internet, I actually enjoyed this episode. As opposed to the divide-and-conquer approach of the previous weeks' largely disappointing episodes, it was refreshing to see an episode this season where the entire gang rallies together for a common goal. It wasn't without flaws (and some of them were big), but this was an episode about the Greendale 7 and there hasn't been one at all since this short season began.

The episode opens with the group longing for their first-choice History of Ice Cream class, which, according to Garrett, is "as informative as it is delicious." It was, if you recall, originally denied from them due to the events of the first episode, but Jeff is looking forward to actually learning something (double shock!) from their altogether more mundane History course.

And then, as if by clockwerk clockwork, the Germans ruin everything. Like in Die Hard 3 and most of the 20th century.

X-Files: Season 10! Coming To A Comic Store Near You!

Hold on to your flashlights and sunflower seeds, my X-Files brethren! Are you ready for this one? X-Files Season 10, a new comic book series straight from series creator Chris Carter is officially happening! Yesterday at Emerald City Comic Con, IDW Publishing and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products revealed their master plan and the most excellent creative team behind it all. Joe Harris will be writing the comic, with art and colors by Michael Walsh and Jordie Bellaire, respectively. Carter is executive producing the whole shebang, with his creative vision intact for this next chapter of Mulder and Scully's lives. Check out this sweet (and scary!) cover art:

The story, according to the press release, will pick up shortly after the second and most recent X-Files movie, with Mulder and Scully living together (awww, my shipper heart beats anew) under different names. Suddenly they get a visit from an unnamed old friend who threatens to blow their quaint suburban life to pieces as someone starts hunting down everyone connected to the X-Files. We will apparently see some old familiar faces in addition to some juicy new characters.

Can I get an AMEN?

Coincidentally, I was bumming around on Netflix the other night and decided to watch one of my favorite X-Files episodes (the whole series is currently up there!). I wistfully thought to myself how they don't make TV like this anymore, and yearned for the good ol' days when I was rightly and truly obsessed with our intrepid agents and their crazy conspiracy antics. It's something you don't even know it unless you lived it - I was a regular fixture on an X-Files community, reading all the message boards, posting day and night, and saving as many photos of David and Gillian to our family computer's hard drive as possible. My girlfriends and I were in love with David and envied Gillian her cool demanor and perfect sassy red hair. There may or may not have been writing of bad fanfic. I laughed and cried (and rolled my eyes during seasons 8 and 9) every Sunday night for years. It was my first true foray into the community of fandom, and I loved every second. As you may guess, this comic is thrilling news - my husband sent me the press release via email and I am not embarassed to tell you that I shrieked with joy, yelping much like Mulder in that long ago episode, "Jose Chung's From Outer Space."

I am very excited to see what Season 10 brings. Like Firefly and Fringe before, seeing the X-Files and Chris Carter branching out into the comic medium is a major score for fans everywhere. I know where I'll be on June 19th - banging down the door of my local comic shop to see where fate takes Mulder and Scully next!

And because I can, here is one of my fave photos from back in the day (THE DAY, MAN!):

Look at these two! Gotta love it. Who do you think we'll see again? We need to see the Skin-man (Walter Skinner), but I can't think of who else they can bring back. Homies are all dead! (the Lone Gunmen, Krychek, CSM, Deep Throat, Diana Fowley, Mulder's whole damn family...all gone!) Color me intrigued - can't wait!

Review: Community, "Conventions of Space and Time"

"See? This is why I don't hang with you folks on the weekends."

This was it: the episode I've been looking forward to since they announced it at SDCC. There's so much possibility here for parody/homage/greatness - poking fun at, while celebrating with, the vocal Comic-Con crowd that are (mostly) responsible for keeping them on the air.

Which is why it pains me to say that this episode is yet another mediocre entry in this fourth season. "Conventions" jumped from hot to cold: we do get hints of brilliance, but you just can't walk away without a bad taste in your mouth - mainly because of one nagging subplot.

Review: Community, "Paranormal Parentage"

"I remember when this show was about a community college."

Couldn't have said it better myself, Abed.

My review of this Happy Valloween episode is a bit overdue, but that's because I had a hard time figuring out how I felt about it. It certainly wasn't bad, but things just weren't clicking here. With every passing episode, it becomes more and more apparent that we're not in the same era of quality that we were from the past three seasons.

The episode opens up with six of our seven study groupers gathering in costume for Vicky's Halloween party -- Pierce, naturally, is not invited on account of the fact that he once stabbed Vicky in the face. Throwing a wrench into their works, Pierce sends them a text message threatening his imminent death, having locked himself in his mansion's panic room with no way out. Despite Jeff's vehement objections, the group heads to Hawthorne Manor for the rescue.

Review: Community, "History 101"

It has been almost a whole year since we last set foot on the Greendale campus, and the road to this point has been tumultuous, to say the least. When fans heard of Dan Harmon's less-than-voluntary exit, most (if not all) were concerned that Community's distinct tone and presentation would be compromised. I was worried, too, but I reserved some cautious optimism for the still-remaining writers and the stellar cast. I had hoped that they would be comfortable enough with the subject matter to continue without Harmon successfully. They must have a handle on it, right?

After watching the first episode, I am glad to see that my cautious optimism was rewarded.

It is just the first episode under the new showrunners, David Guarascio and Moses Port (Happy Endings.) They are attempting to define their own voices within the self-referential, "Incepting" of the series, with hints of Harmon (a wise decision.) For all practical purposes, "History 101" is a pilot - except it already has tons of very vocal fans. That can't be an easy position to walk into.

But while this episode was still a solid entry into the Community canon, it was far from perfect. Moreover, it was fairly clear to me that there was a marked difference in presentation -- but I wonder how much of the normal viewing public would notice, if they didn't know that the show changed hands between seasons 3 and 4?

Community: Best of the Greendale Seven!

Can you feel it in the air? October 19th finally takes over hearts on this February 7th, and Community once again airs tonight on NBC.

After last year's delays and controversies, many doubted whether we'd see the study group's antics ever again. They had plenty of reason to worry, of course -- Dan Harmon's less-than-ceremonious exit as showrunner; public issues with Chevy Chase; Megan Ganz's exit as writer; its forced "indefinite hiatus" from the fall schedule -- but it looks like it finally all systems go for the small Colorado-based community college.

And so the sun shines again, smiling down on the flag that proudly proclaims "E Pluribus Anus."

To prepare for the new semester, your summer homework was to watch all three seasons of Community, but you'd only be a proper Greendale student if you neglected to do it entirely. So, here's a cheat sheet with some of the best moments of the Greendale Seven (+ two).

Hit the jump for the full list of some of the greatest moments at Greendale!

Community airs Thursday nights at 8PM on NBC.

Review: Star Wars #2

Following the first AND second printing sellout of Star Wars #1 in January, the new series from Dark Horse hits lightspeed with issue #2 this week. While issue #1 set the board, issue #2 saw the pieces begin to move.

This installment kicks off with Han and Chewie on their own secret mission, which was vaguely teased in issue #1. They too have been tasked by Mon Mothma with a clandestine undertaking, but all the reader can glean so far is that it involves Rebel Alliance funds. (Han, don't you owe enough people money?) In keeping with the well-known fact that the Millennium Falcon is never operating at peak performance, our favorite smuggler pair argues/growls about the state of the ship’s sensors while loitering at a Rebel rendezvous. Much to the joy of any fan, the lack of sensor detection capability results in everyone’s favorite bounty hunter getting the drop on the Falcon. Mr. Bob A. Feet’s untimely arrival is compounded by the appearance of a Star Destroyer, furthering the notion that there is an Imperial spy in the Alliances’ midst. Needless to say, Han and Chewie cheese it.

Back at the still homeless Rebel Fleet, we are presented with an utterly heart-wrenching moment as Leia tortures herself with a recording of an Alderaan tourism pitch. It might sound silly, but the fact that all she has left of her home is a smattering of images and a disembodied voice describing scenic vistas and promoting "Old Republic charm" tugs at the heartstrings. With responsibilities to the Alliance constantly bearing down on her shoulders, she must take her moments to mourn where she can get them. Occupying the rest of Leia's time, however, is her mission to locate a suitable base for the Rebels. To counter the alleged mole in the Alliance, the Princess has assembled her hand-picked team of pilots, including Luke, Wedge, a Trandoshan, a Twi'lek (how she fits the tentacles under the helmet is anyone’s guess), and a handful of humans. And what’s a black ops team without some fun toys? Straight from the Incom Corp itself, the squad receives some slick, black X-Wings with which to carry out their super secret assignment. I'm pretty sure I was just as excited to see them as Wedge.

'What's going on in the Empire?' you ask? Well, Imperial tight-ass Colonel Bircher has swaggered his way onto the Star Destroyer Devastator to replace the shamed Darth Vader. Sadly, the Dark Lord is not present, so we don't get the openly hostile/smug transfer of command you might expect. Instead, we get a glimpse of Col. Bircher's militant personality...and that's saying something for an Imperial. This guy did the whole check-dust-with-the-glove thing....ON A STORMTROOPER'S FACE! Grand Admiral Thrawn he is not, but this guy is going to be a Hutt-sized pain in someone's ass. For entertainment's sake, I hope it's Vader's rather than the Rebels'.

To wrap up the issue, we get another clue as to what Han and Chewie's mission entails. We still don't know what Mon Mothma has planned for them, but we do know where they will be executing it: Coruscant. A good "Holy Crap!" moment on which to leave us hanging. Well-played, Mr. Wood. Well-played.

Star Wars #2, written by Brian Wood and drawn by Carlos D'Anda, is out today. Be sure to pick up your copy before it sells out. Trust me. It will. Expect the third printing of issue #1 on February 27th.

Iron Man 3 kicks off Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on May 3rd.

First "Superman: Unbound" Trailer Revealed!

Way back at NYCC, we brought you DC Animation's announcement of their 2013 lineup, including one Superman: Unbound. Not a lot of details were present at the time, but we now we have the trailer (thanks to the good people at The Nerdist) for your viewing pleasure!

Inspired by the "Brainiac" storyline from Action Comics #866-#870 originally penned by Geoff Johns, Superman (Matt Bomer, White Collar) and his cousin, Supergirl (Molly Quinn, Castle), will taken on the Kryptonian AI Brainiac (John Noble, Fringe) from invading, conquering, and bottling yet another city for his collection. (It's actually far more terrifying than it sounds.) Stana Katic (Castle) will also be joining in on the fun as everybody's favorite reporter, Lois Lane.

We were originally told that we'd "go gaga" over their choice for their casting roles in this pic (particularly Superman), and, I'll be honest: I'm impressed. Glad to see Matt Bomer getting some attention - I look forward to hearing his full take on Supes - and we certainly do love our Castle actors around these parts. Most of all though, John Noble's take on the coldly sadistic Brainiac should prove quite entertaining.

Superman: Unbound is slated for a Blu-Ray, DVD, and digital download release this summer.

UPDATE: We have just received word that Superman: Unbound will be released in May 7, 2013!
