Look! Up in the sky! Or…maybe just at the internet.
There’s been plenty of talk about DC Comics’ next foray into television as Supergirl begins production. Cameras rolled on CBS’s superhero series this week following casting announcements that included former Supergirl and Superman Helen Slater and Dean Cain in undisclosed roles, Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, and Faran Tahir as The Commander.
However, one of the biggest questions on the minds of fans was what costume will actress Melissa Benoist don when she graces the small screen later this year. As many know, Supergirl has had more costume variations than there are human Green Lanterns, so there were plenty to choose from, including Bruce Timm’s 90s cheerleader, Michael Turner’s bare midriff, and the New 52’s collared cape. But, when else fails, a classic never dies. Check out the first photos of Melissa as Supergirl!
She definitely is Supergirl! I’m reminded of how I felt when I first saw the earliest images of Grant Gustin as The Flash prior to the show’s debut, which is fitting since this costume was also designed by three-time Oscar winner Colleen Atwood, who also designed the costumes for executive producer Greg Berlanti’s other two DC Comics shows, The Flash and Arrow. In a post X-Men world where black leather jumpsuits have given way to more traditional super-styles, it’s good to see a classic look get acknowledged.
Similar to Henry Cavill’s suit from Man of Steel, this costume’s colors have been toned down and the suit itself given some texture, but unlike her cinematic cousin, Kara is sporting the original, more angular S shield, which has ditched the gold backing in favor of simple gold trim instead.
The look falls right in line with the style of CW’s Arrow and Flash, which, despite Supergirl appearing on CBS, bodes well for a potential crossover in the future. Plus, with talks of a potential spinoff for Brandon Routh’s Ray Palmer/The Atom, the DC Television Universe grows every day, one hero (or heroine) at a time.
