Wizard World Philadelphia 2012: GeekNation Launch Party

In the midst of the swirling winds of geekdom that tore through Philadelphia this past weekend, fans and celebrities alike were treated to a celebration to kick off GeekNation, the latest online source for all things…well…geek!

Hosted by the Field House Sports Bar, and sponsored by Super Hero Stuff and Zenoscope, the GeekNation BETA Launch Party gave fans an opportunity to rub elbows with convention guests, enjoy hero-themed drinks, and rock out with Kirby Krackle.

The red carpet was graced by such fan favorites as Charlie O’Connell, star of the new indie film Huff, lightsaber guru Nick Gillard, Animal House alum Mark Metcalf, comic artists Yanick Paquette and Dennis Calero, and the Boondock Saints themselves, Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery.

The party atmosphere was just what you'd expect from an event following a day at a comic con. Guys in Green Lantern t-shirts mingled with lovely ladies in cocktail dresses as they sipped their "Thor Hammers" and "Captain America Kill Shots." Fans also managed to keep a close eye on the doors to see which celebrities might waltz in next. (Sadly, despite a vicious rumor, Chris Hemsworth did not show up to drink, fight, and make his ancestors proud.) And to keep the crowd entertained, Kirby Krackle's Kyle Stevens rocked out with a few nerd rock hits, including "One More Episode" and "Ring Capacity."

Of course, lest we forget, this incredible party was to celebrate the launch of GeekNation, which opened its virtual doors at midnight this past Saturday.  And bringing it all together was none other than Clare Kramer, Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Glory, and founder of GeekNation.  I was lucky enough to steal a quick 60 seconds with Clare to hear what GeekNation is all about.

"GeekNation is an online entertainment destination site," says Kramer. "We have podcasts, web series, blogs, editorials, and pop culture pieces. It’s really creating a nice online destination community so you don’t have to hop around site to site."

According to Kramer, GeekNation is to be an info hub for all-things geek: "You can just go to GeekNation and get all of your content there."

If it's intended to be an "entertainment destination," then can other geeks (and geek-related sites... hint hint) connect with GeekNation? "In terms of partnerships, we’re just launching tonight, so we’re open to anything! Win us over!"
