It’s been off the air for almost 10 years now, but love for the Joss Whedon series Firefly continues to thrive. We’re certainly partial to the sci-fi/western around these parts, and we’re not alone. Fans packed the biggest rooms at San Diego Comic-Con and New York Comic Con this year, celebrating its 10th anniversary — it was so packed that not even we at OTF could get in to either event, despite our best efforts. Not that we’re bitter. (Ok, we’re totally bitter. And, ok, it wasn’t our best efforts since we had no intention of sleeping on concrete.)
But from a less selfish perspective, we’re happy that such an amazing series that was unmercifully axed after only 14 episodes still gets so much love. It’s only right that quality work gets recognition (especially in a world where Honey Boo Boo is a thing.)
To that end, we completely support new Science Channel documentary Firefly: Browncoats Unite airing Sunday, November 11. Browncoats Unite features series creator Joss Whedon, EP Tim Minear, story editor Jose Molina, and the impressive cast collecting together for the first time to provide and discuss the complete history behind the franchise that continues grow in support – despite meeting its end a decade ago. In the one hour special, the Serenity crew will sit down for a frank discussion about their time aboard the Serenity, including “the moment they realized they were canceled and where they believe the Firefly universe could live next,” according to the press release.
Quite frankly, we cannot wait to hear more about everything that took place behind the scenes at one of our favorite TV shows of all time. In the rare opportunities we’ve had to hear the cast speak of their time on the series, they have never failed to talk about how much they loved doing it — it’s sure to get a little emotional for everyone in the documentary and for the fans, as we remember why the series is so special such that it’s impact has lasted for far longer its life.
Firefly: Browncoats Unite airs Sunday, November 11 at 10PM on the Science Channel, following an all-day marathon of the entire Firefly series. Set your DVRs now.
