So a Canadian, an Aussie, and a Brit walk into the Shire…
Evangeline Lilly, known mainly for her Livelinks ad, her modeling from G4TechTV’s Judgment Day, and some barely-known stint as Kate Austen on Lost, appears as Tauriel, a newly-created Woodland elf. Jackson only teased that her name means “Daughter of Mirkwood,” whatever that means. Promising that there will no romantic connection to Legolas, Jackson says that “[Lilly] will be the one to bring our first true Sylvan Elf to life.”
Barry Humphries, known for his lilac-haired, cross-dressing character Dame Edna, also joins the already-massive cast as the Goblin King. Humphries will play the character “in much the way Andy Serkis created Gollum,” implying that Humphries will give life to the Goblin King through some CGI masterwork.
Lastly, Sherlock Holmes rejoins Dr. John Watson, as Benedict Cumberbatch (an incredible name that you should know how to pronounce) rejoins Martin Freeman in this fantasy tale. Cumberbatch will voice the dragon Smaug, while Freeman, of course, takes on the titular Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins.
The two Hobbit films are slated for release in December 2012 and 2013. Co-produced by New Line Cinema and MGM, Warner Bros Pictures handling domestic distribution and MGM distributing internationally.
