In a discussion of cloud computing at the University of Washington, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer made a statement that caused quite a few newshounds’ ears perk up.
During a Q&A session after the actual speech, an attendee asked about the varying collaborative efforts among some hardware vendors. Ballmer replied with an interesting quote:
You get exactly the Xboxes that we build for you. We may have more form factors in the future that are designed for various price points and options, but we think it’s going to [be] important.
A statement like this could certainly be construed as implying that more Xbox iterations are planned for the future. Microsoft certainly has a love for multiple SKUs of a single device (currently, the Arcade and the Elite; formerly, the Pro; and occasionally, the game-bundled limited editions,) so it certainly would not be difficult to think that more may be on the way.
Of course, this would be the first that we’ve heard of new hardware price points, and the off-the-cuff nature of the answer makes the idea suspect at best, but the idea is rather intriguing. We’ll just have to see what the future reveals, won’t we?
