Neill Blomkamp’s Alien Sequel Will Give Ellen Ripley “A Proper Ending”

The First Lady of sci-fi action is going on another bug hunt.

Following the recent announcement that director Neill Blomkamp will be directing a new Alien sequel, it has been revealed that Ellen Ripley is set to return to that universe as well. And this won’t be a younger Ripley portrayed by a new actress, a la J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot. Fresh off her collaboration with Blomkamp on Chappie, Sigourney Weaver is set to reprise her iconic role of the space-trucker-turned-badass for a fifth go-around.

Similar to how Bryan Singer followed only Superman and Superman II when making 2006’s Superman Returns, Blomkamp plans to follow the events of Aliens, but not necessarily ignore the continuity of Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection. In an interview with French film site AlloCine, Blomkamp clarified his intentions.

“I’m not trying to undo ‘Alien 3′ or ‘Alien Resurrection.’ …My favorites are the first two movies. I want to make a film that’s connected to ‘Alien’ and ‘Aliens.’ That’s my goal.”

This raises questions over Blomkamp’s earlier intentions to give Ripley’s character “a proper ending.” If she still ends up on Fiorina ‘Fury’ 161 following this new sequel, won’t she still end of shaving her head and dying in a vat of molten metal? I’ll leave this issue to Neill. I’m sure he has it sorted out. Either way,  if a slight retooling of continuity means the return of Michael Biehn’s Corporal Hicks, as hinted by Blomkamp’s concept art, I am on board 100%.

This is a project we will likely be following very closely, so check back in the future for more updates!
