Is Ra’s al Ghul immortal? Are his methods…..supernatural?
According to unconfirmed reports by The Hollywood Reporter, Pence will portray the young Ra’s al Ghul. For this film, the character, previous played by Liam Neeson in 2005’s Batman Begins, will appear in flashback sequences set 30 years before the events of The Dark Knight Rises. Additional unconfirmed reports have stated that Marion Cotillard, while definitely a cast member, may or may not be playing Talia al Ghul, daughter of Ra’s. If both reports turn out to be true, the flashbacks in question may deal with Talia in her youth, and may also address her relationship with her father.
To have Ra’s al Ghul appearing younger only 30 years prior to the present indicates that Nolan’s Batman universe definitely does not address the character’s immortality, a theme that has been a huge part of the villain’s history in DC Comics. However, “keeping it grounded” has seemed to be Nolan’s biggest concern in creating his on-screen Gotham City and its inhabitants, so supernatural themes may have no place in his vision.
Oddly enough, in May 2012, Josh Pence will star alongside Liam Neeson in Battleship, a film adaptation of the popular Milton Bradley game.
The Dark Knight Rises is getting ready to start shooting in Pittsburgh, and will arrive in theaters on July 20th, 2012.
