A lot of news came out of Comic Con this past weekend. A lot of it had to do with upcoming films from DC and Marvel. But a tiny little gem has slipped under the radar.
Publisher IDW has announced a 4-issue mini-series featuring the late Dave Stevens’s pulp hero, The Rocketeer. Due in 2011, the series will return Cliff Secord to comic book pages after a 16-year absence (unless you count the re-release of the original series in a bound collection in February 2009).
Contributing to the new series are such industry heavyweights as Mike Allred, Kurt Busiek, John Cassaday, Darwyn Cooke, Michael Golden, Gene Ha, Michael Kaluta, Garry Leach, Bruce Timm and Bill Willingham. And rounding out this who’s who of comic book talent is the legendary Alex Ross, who will be creating covers for the series.
IDW Special Projects Editor Scott Dunbier had this to say about the upcoming project.
Dave Stevens was an incredibly talented artist and a wonderful person. I would like to think that he would be happy with a book like this, one that pays such loving tribute to his greatest creation.
The Rocketeer also appeared in the 1991 film adaptation, directed by Captain America helmer Joe Johnston.
As a fan of both The Rocketeer and pulp heroes in general, I hope for great things from this project.
