With Marvel making its grand announcement about Chris Evans snagging the part of Captain America, DC fires right back with a late addition to the cast of Green Lantern.
Academy Award Nominee Angela Bassett (What’s Love Got To Do With It, “ER”) has taken the role of Amanda Waller, the ruthless manipulator behind such groups as Checkmate and the Suicide Squad.
Bassett will take her place alongside actresses CCH Pounder and Pam Grier as women who have brought this character to the screen. Pounder provided Waller’s voice on the animated series Justice League Unlimited, and Grier has just recently joined the recurring cast of Smallville.
This can almost be seen as a move by DC/Warner to counter Marvel’s grand scheme of establishing the broad universe that all these characters populate. Waller is a Nick Fury-type character (to a degree) and could easily appear in other DC-related film projects, mostly notably a Suicide Squad film, which appears to be in the works.
All this casting news is great, but Green Lantern has already started shooting in New Orleans. Can we get some photos? Pleeeeeeaaaaase?
Green Lantern is directed by Martin Campbell and will hit theaters on June 17, 2011.
