FLAME ON! Oh…sorry…
After weeks, nay, months of rumors and speculation, the interwebz are ablaze with confirmation that Chris Evans has accepted the role of Captain America. The 28-year-old actor will wield the shield as Steve Rogers in The First Avenger: Captain America. Evans is no stranger to film adaptations of comics. He has starred in both Fantastic 4 films, Push, and will appear in the upcoming films The Losers and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. He also provided the voice of Casey Jones in TMNT.
With the Fantastic 4 films still fresh in the minds of those who enjoyed them, it might be weird to see the Human Torch as Captain America. Actors taking multiple roles within the Marvel Universe films is not unheard of, but this will definitely be the most prominent. Evans will join the ranks with Jon Favreau (Daredevil & Iron Man), Sam Elliott (Hulk & Ghost Rider), Ray Stevenson (Punisher: War Zone & Thor), and Ryan Reynolds (X-Men Origins: Wolverine & Blade: Trinity).
The deal Evans has made with Marvel will have him appearing in at least three Cap films as well as The Avengers, due May 4th, 2012. Get comfortable in that suit, Chris. Looks like you’ll be wearing it for a while.
Evans will square off against Hugo Heaving as the Red Skull on July 22, 2011 in the Joe Johnston-directed film.
